The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

Killed in action between 25 and 27 Oct 1914 aged 37. Born Sep 1877 the second son of the late Arthur Barnsley of Southward Rd, Liverpool. His brother was the Rev George Barnsley MA, Rector of Yarm from 1919 to 1930 and his wife Ethel Edna later remarried and became Mrs Summers of Mount Stuart, Boscombe, Hants. Barnsley attended Uppingham School between May 1892 and the Summer of 1897 and then went to Oxford. At both places he was in the Shooting Eights. He served in the Imperial Yeomanr y in South Africa 1900-1901 and was mentioned in despatches twice as well as receiving the Queens Medal and two clasps. He was made an honorary Lieutenant in the Special Reserve in Dec 1902, at the same time as he entered the Lancs Fus. He became proficient in many military subjects – he was qualified in musketry, obtained a certificate in transport duties, was instructor in army signals and Regimental instructor in musketry. He was made Capt in May 1906. At Christmas 1919 a Processional Cross was presented to Yarm Church by Miss Florence Blythe in the memory of her nephew. It is clear that Barnsley was not a Yarm man but was probably included out of deference to the new Rector’s wishes. Because of his fathers death and the fact that his brother had moved to Yarm his name does not appear to be recorded elsewhere and for this reason his name remains.
